Hello Marko.
Welcome to hello marko. A look at what might be going on, what might be informing decisions in our world (and perhaps yours?), a look at what's working, and what's not, with an occasional "editorial coloring" at the front (if we're feeling particularly feisty...) a little resource from us to you. Take what you like and leave the rest...now back to work!

DIY (from the Seattle conference)
posted by marko on 16 November 2008
last week I was in Seattle doing a panel for the grammy organization as part of a two day music and technology fest. the conference was one of the better I have been involved in as of late (thanks ben!) and as we had our big thinking philosophy discussions, I was struck by the lack of a "how the hell do I get started" discussion for the folks at the conference that were not necessarily ready to engage a company like echo.

so, I thought I’d put a little run down of a set of tools that you can use to get started with very little time or dough to get to it (DIY right?!) obviously, there are tons of options, tools, and no shortage of companies or people to advise you on what the right thing to do might be. so take what you like and leave the rest. or as my friend rufus says, “the advice is worth what you are paying for it…”
before we get into tools, lets do chat a bit about philosophy for a sec. you want to sit down and think about what you want out of this…be specific. if you want to be kanye or bon jovi, the path is much different that if you want to be over the rhine or slaid cleaves. I don’t believe that anyone sets out to be “small”, but, getting to a self-sustaining business is much different than being on the cover or rolling stone and playing the garden. -

while i'm thinking about it, heard a couple great quotes during the sessions that i dug:
“In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.”
"if you are going through hell, keep going"
“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”
the last two are winston churchill, the first is eric hoffer. -

seattle pt 3 – lunch with garth
posted by marko on 28 October 2008
on a plane headed to LA for a couple days of meetings. flying on the rock n' roll airline, virgin america. gotta love an airline with black lights in the cabin. the plane's red areas are painted with a sparkle finish (like a hot rod), hope they make it.

so, for those of you who are not familiar with my affinity for garth stein, check back to the blog titled "racing in the rain" and several subsequent blogs where i pull from garth's work. a couple months ago, i started an email dialog with him, looking for a way to connect in person when i was in seattle. he was kind enough to respond, but unsure how to take me a first. over the course of a couple convo's via email, we found a time that would work for both of us to meet in person. the venue was the house of hong, a bit south of downtown seattle. I'm pretty sure the entire wait staff works on commission, i have never seen so many trays of food wheeled around in my life. we loaded up on chow, and engaged in conversation. -

lunch at the beach with susan silver...a perfect mid day excursion, a little informal real estate investigation, too much coffee, a little work interlude (one fire, one opp), and then a trip to the apple store for a new iphone (steve jobs is truly a crack dealer...can't get enough...)

susan on several levels exactly what i expected, but there were a couple surprises. we met a dukes in west seattle, landed in the section of one of the more entertaining waiters either one of us had ever experienced, and spend an hour and a half talking about our histories, passions, and the future of music. -
seattle part 1
posted by marko on 26 October 2008
last night i arrived in seattle for a little hang time, a mix of business and pleasure. don't often read the paper over a cup of coffee with no where to be, but that was the case this morning, and it was quite lovely.

today i am headed to the beach to meet with susan silver, a smart and powerful woman who was at the epicenter of the rise of grunge in the 90's. she sent a note that it was a lovely day, and rather than meet in town, would i come to west seattle and hang at the beach. preferable, actually...
i spent the morning wandering the public market, coffee at "local color", a trip by the 2nd starbucks (the origional burnt down a while back)...more on starbucks later, fish chucking, art, local street music, an amazing photographer named rick morley, and a couple interesting conversations...
life is good, more later!
